Otherwise unmarked.Written and illustrated by Doreen Wolfsen McColaugh, an AWF staffer in Nairobi, and produced "in-house" by the African Wildlife Foundation's Kenya field office; typeset and printed by Majestic Printing Works Ltd, Nairobi. The text profiles fifty-one East African mammals, expanding a seventy-five-week wildlife column written by McColaugh and colleagues for the Sunday Nation newspaper in Kenya during 1986 and 1987. Foreword by Mark R. Stanley Price, AWF Director of African Operations. The book was later adapted (with revised text and color illustrations) as the AWF's 1997 Wild Lives Guidebook (OCLC 55727680).Reference apparatus at the rear includes a map of thirty-two protected areas across Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda; a 1989 list of AWF projects; and a comprehensive species-by-park matrix indicating where each of the featured mammals can be observed in the wild.[From the Introduction]"This book aims to provide interested students and adults with information that will encourage learning more about East African mammals and their lives in the wild. Although non-technical, it does contain descriptions that will help identify the animals in the wild and provides accurate information about how they live, behave and relate to one another. Use this book to learn more about wildlife, and then teach others. Although we live on this planet with a great number of other living things, we are frequently so intent on our own personal survival that we are not always excited about the wildlife which shares our planet. The African continent has a special heritage, for it has one of the richest wildlife arrays, especially in its variety of large mammals. East and Central Africa are home to the most numerous and varied species of the wild mammals on the continent.".
