A student and then graduate of the Female Department of Baylor College at Independence, McNeill recorded antebellum plantation life, the Civil War from the Confederate home front, and the upheaval of Reconstruction, alongside an educated young woman's reflections on faith, ambition, and her decision not to marry. Edited from the surviving manuscript by McNeill's descendant Ginny McNeill Raska and by Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill, whose work on the diary grew out of the archaeological field school at the Levi Jordan Plantation.
