Ajouter au panierUnframed Print. Etat : Very Good. A single sheet print, image area approx. 18 x 28 cms. In the spring of 1887, the riverside town of East Molesey witnessed the emergence of a bold new enterprise: Harry Taggs Restaurant, Hotel and Boating Premises, a multifaceted leisure complex designed to serve the growing tide of Thames-bound visitors. Tagg, a local waterman with entrepreneurial flair, had long operated boat-hiring businesses along the river, but this new venture marked a significant expansion of ambition. Located at the corner of Bridge Road and what would later become Feltham Avenuethen known as Griffens Cornerthe site was transformed into a modern hospitality hub, combining dining, lodging, and boating facilities under one roof. The East Molesey Local Board approved the plans in January 1887, and by November, the building was complete and granted a provisional innkeepers license. Though officially named the Thames Hotel, it was affectionately known by locals simply as Taggs, a name that lingered well beyond Harrys tenure. The architectural design, published in The Building News, is credited to J. Bernard Bunning of Surrey Street, Strand W.C. Bunnings illustration reveals a richly detailed Victorian structure, complete with gabled roofs, turrets, and ornate woodwork, all set against a lively riverside scene populated by figures in period attire. The accompanying floor plans offer a glimpse into the spatial logic of the establishment, with clearly delineated dining rooms, guest quarters, and service areas. The buildings style and layout reflect the eras fascination with leisure architecturedesigned not merely for function, but to impress and entice. Harry Taggs venture mirrored the success of his brother Tom, who developed similar boating and hotel enterprises on nearby Taggs Island. Together, the Tagg brothers helped shape the Thames as a playground for the Victorian middle class, blending local knowledge with commercial savvy and a keen eye for architectural spectacle. The illustrations found in leading architectural journals of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, such as The Builder, Building News, and The Architect are masterpieces of visual craftsmanship. Years of speculation about Warburton's fate came to an end in 2002, when his remains were found with his aircraft, buried about 2 yards deep in a field near the Bavarian village of Egling an der Paar, 34 miles west of Munich. According to witnesses, the aircraft fell there on 12 April 1944, around 11:45. One of the propellers had bullet holes in it, which suggests that Warburton had been shot down. Ajouter au panierOn one side of a piece of light-brown laid paper, dimensions roughly 240 x 125 mm. Text clear and entire, on lightly creased paper with chipping, short closed tears and loss to extremities. Crudely printed. A thirty-two line poem, arranged in four four-line stanzas, each with a different chorus. An excessively scarce piece of music hall ephemera. No other copy of this particular item, possibly produced for distribution to Hurley's music hall audience, is present on COPAC or anywhere on the web. The sheet music of the song, written by Harry Castling, and set to music by George Le Brunn, was published by Francis, Day & Hunter (1898). First stanza and chorus: 'I'm very fond of peace and quiet wherever I may be, | And tidiness at home it does my eye-sight good to see: | And when I've done a hard day's work I want my rest, you're sure, | And it's grand, it's great, to spot this when I'm entering our door. | Chorus. - | There's the missis making dumplings, The kids all singing hymns, | And last week's heavy washing all hanging about; | When I think to marry Hannah, Cost me seven and a tanner, | Then I say - it's money well laid out!' The cockney character of the piece is indicated by the following: 'I've treated our landlord to drinks a thousand times, I'll bet, | He's made attempts to treat me but 'e ain't been guilty yet; | The last time that I lushed him up, says 'e, "You're werry kind," | But never got his hand down once, though he got nearly blind.' Cockneyisms include 'blooming impudence', 'tanner', 'he pinched it', 'I've got a quid Wot I don't want to change', 'kept chucking his carcass about', 'Well, I spent three bob on liquor, But I done him for his ticker', 'these wuss worse for wear', 'I told the wife it's money frowed away upon the kid'.
