Hardcover. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. 1st Edition. 367 pages. Huge volume. Hardcover with a dust jacket. Over 475 illustrations. Very detailed. The rifle-caliber Browning was the most popular and most-used machine gun ever designed. The book discusses and illustrates in considerable detail the many variations on the basic recoil-operated Browning which were manufactured and/or used in over twenty countries, in both World Wars, in Korea and in Vietnam. Of particular interest is the focus on the aircraft Browning beginning in the Interwar years, in Britain and particularly in Belgium, where to keep pace with airspeeds of the best new fighters and pursuit aircraft Dieudonne Saive, John Browning's erstwhile chief assistant, twice increased the firing rate of the FN aircraft Browning, first in 1932 to 1,200 rpm and again in 1938 to 1,500 rpm. Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 2nd Edition. Second Edition, Expanded and Revised, 367 pages, Hard cover with a dust jacket, Over 500 illustrations. Maxim invented a self-powered machine gun, which performed all the necessary functions--loading, cocking, locking, firing, unlocking, extracting, ejecting, indexing and reloading--by means of the gun's own ammunition-instigated recoil energy, which others had described as "at best useless, and at worst dangerous". As the sun set forever on the era of the hand-cranked mahcine gun, consolidations and licensed production agreements turned the Maxim into a worldwide phenomenon. During World War I the Maxim earned the singular if somewhat dubious distinction of being the only gun used in virtually identical versions by both sides: "The Devel's Paintbrush" was an expression coined during the Great War by allied correspondents to describe the ghastly carnage wreaked by MG08 Maxims in the hands of elite German machine gun crews. Prototype and production versions of every sort of Maxim from over a dozen user countries are described and illustrated, along with the incredibly varied and ingenious array of accessories an ancillaies produced around the world during the Maxim's eighty-year lifespan. A fascinaing and valuable reference. Long out of print. A beautiful Very Fine As New copy at a reasonable price. …

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. Illustrated Edition. SYNOPSIS The story of the world's first true automatic machine gun begins right at the beginning and goes on to explain how the Maxim works and how it has been used and modified by armies across the world to devastating effect. Includes many expert tips on troubleshooting & restoring the highly collectible Maxim today. This celebrated study has been hailed as "simply the best book ever written about machine guns." FINE/FINE BOOK INFO Published in 2012 by Collector Grade Publications in Ontario, Canada. The preferred revised and greatly expanded third edition, an acclaimed classic. In its rich chocolate brown moroccoette boards with gilt spine lettering. With its original dust jacket carefully preserved in an archival Mylar wrap since sold new. Quarto, 11.25" x 8.75". 584 pages and 819 illustrations. "Devil's Paintbrush" is the nickname for the German MG08 machine gun, a World War I weapon based on the Maxim gun designed by Sir Hiram Maxim. The name refers to the devastating, wide-sweeping fire it laid down, which could "paint" a swath of destruction across the landscape, trapping soldiers in trenches. It was a heavy, tripod-mounted, water-cooled machine gun known for its high rate of fire and effectiveness as a defensive weapon. ABOUT THE PROLIFIC INVENTOR Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim (February 1840 - November 1916) was an American-born British inventor best known as the creator of the first automatic machine gun, the Maxim gun. Maxim held patents on numerous mechanical devices such as hair-curling irons, a mousetrap, and steam pumps. Maxim laid claim to inventing the lightbulb. Circa 1904 he designed a highly successful amusement ride called the "Captive Flying Machine" to fund his research while generating public interest in flight. Maxim moved from the United States to the United Kingdom at the age of 41 and remained an American citizen until he became a naturalized British citizen in 1899, receiving a knighthood in 1901. He also invented an apparatus for demagnetizing watches, magno-electric machines, devices to prevent the rolling of ships, eyelet and riveting machines, aircraft artillery, an aerial torpedo gun, coffee substitutes, and various oil, steam, and gas engines. After a large furniture factory had burned down, Maxim was consulted on how to prevent a recurrence. As a result, Maxim invented the first automatic fire sprinkler. Maxim developed and installed the first electric lights in a New York City building and was involved in several lengthy patent disputes with Thomas Edison over his claims to the lightbulb. After moving to England, he settled in a large house formerly owned by Lord Thurlow in West Norwood where he developed the Maxim gun in 1884. It was the first fully automatic machine gun in the world. It has had an immense and lasting impact on modern warfare. With arms sales led by Basil Zaharoff, variants of the Maxim gun were bought and used extensively by both sides during World War I. CONDITION REPORT The book is in FINE condition. Square spine, firm hinges and joints, sharp corners, tight pages and binding. Interior is like new with bright, white, clean pages without wear. No writing, ex libris marks or bookplates. The dust jacket is FINE - clean, colorful, unfaded, firm and tight. Minimal rubbing or wear of any kind. All in all, a superior collectible copy. …

Hardcover. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. The Vickers machine gun was such an integral part of 20th century history that it is embedded in almost every history book of the two Great Wars. Historian and machine gunner Dolf L. Rifle Caliber Brownings Abroad' The brand-new second volume of Dolf Goldsmith's series proves beyond any doubt that the rifle-caliber Browning was simply the most popular and most-used machine gun ever designed. It discusses and illustrates in considerable detail the many variations on the basic recoil-operated Brownings which were manufactured and/or used in over twenty countries, in both World Wars, in Korea and in Vietnam. Of particular interest is the focus on the aircraft Browning, beginning in the Interwar years, in Britain and particularly in Belgium, where to keep pace with the airspeeds of the best new fighter and pursuit aircraft Dieudonne Saive, John Browning's erstwhile chief assistant, twice increased the firing rate of the FN aircraft Browning , first in 1932 to 1,200 rpm and again in 1938 to 1,500 rpm. 8 1/2 X 11 inches, hardcover with dust jacket with dust jacket, illus, 367 pages.…

This profusely illustrated history covers all models of the U.S. Browning, from the first 'gas hammer' Model 1895 and the initial recoil-operated Models of 1901 and 1910, through the adoption and manufacture of the famous water-cooled heavy Model 1917 during World War I and the numerous Interwar experimental tank and aircraft guns, most of which were built up on surplus M1917 receivers. Tank and cavalry experiments led to the development of the air-cooled M1919A4 infantry gun, while Colt's heavy investment in the Browning system paid off handsomely in the lightweight, fast-firing, dual-feed M2 aircraft machine gun, which was sold commercially and made in large numbers during World War II. Existing stocks of the M1917 water-cooled gun were meanwhile retrofitted to the improved M1917A specification, and the failed Ordnance Department light machine gun competition, discussed in detail, resulted in the compromise M1916A6. The history of Browning manufacture by Rock Island Arsenal, Saginaw Steering Gear and other contractors is followed by chapters recounting the heroic use of the Browning in WWII and Korea, and all subsequent variations, such as the M1919A4E1, the T151, T152, T153 and M37 tank gun, until these fine guns were phased out after the adoption of the general-purpose M60 in 1957. 8 1/2 X 11 inches, hardcover with dust jacket with dust jacket, illus, 552 pages.…

Hardcover. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. Volume Four covers the same basic topics as the three previous volumes, but from the exclusive standpoint of the .50 caliber Browning, which has been in continuous service longer than any other weapon in the U.S. arsenal, and is still in use today in the inventories of 86 countries worldwide. 2008 marks the 90th anniversary of John Browning's first .50 caliber prototype, which, after a shaky start, came into its own with the introduction of the M2 'universal receiver' in 1933. A total of eight prime contractors - three of them divisions of the General Motors Corporation which had never produced a firearm of any kind before - manufactured nearly two million .50 caliber Brownings, of six basic types, during WWII. By the late 1970s U.S. Army requirements had exceeded available stocks, and today a number of modern contractors are again producing standard and enhanced versions of the venerable M2 in the U.S., Britain and elsewhere. 8 1/2 X 11 inches, hardcover with dust jacket with dust jacket, illus, 415 pages.…

Hardcover. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. The Browning Machine Gun Vol. 3 is the third volume in author Dolf Goldsmith's monumental series on the Browning machine gun. Volume I, subtitled Rifle Caliber Brownings in U.S. Service, published in 2005, covers the invention, development and manufacturing history of all models of rifle caliber Brownings in the United States, and their use by U.S. forces in two World Wars and Korea. Volume II, Rifle Caliber Brownings Abroad, published in 2006, covers the offshore production and use of rifle caliber Brownings in 35 other countries. However, the gun itself was only a part of the total picture, as a great deal of auxiliary equipment was needed to keep it in action. The development work that went into these many accessories and ancillaries, here meticulously researched by a well-known machine gun collector, lifelong shooter and ex-U.S. Army armorer, is as interesting as that of the gun, and in some cases even more so, yet up to now it has scarcely been documented anywhere, except for basic descriptions found in military manuals. Volume III contains in-depth coverage on component nomenclature and theory of operation; ground, vehicle and aircraft mounts; sights and sighting equipment; flash hiders; ammunition; ammunition boxes, belts and links; belt filling machines and link loaders; cooling equipment; transport equipment; canvas accessories; training devices (including .22 caliber guns and conversion kits); tools and gauges; caliber conversions; manuals, handbooks and other instructions. 8 1/2 X 11 inches, hardcover with dust jacket with dust jacket, illus, 488 pages.…
