The Print Advertisement is now rare. Presents "Calvin Klein Men's Underwear Print Ad: Joel West". The sexily suggestive image of the American supermodel, one of the very first male supermodels who emerged in the 1990's, is a more brazen variation of the ground-breaking Calvin Klein advertising campaign that was launched with Tom Hintnaus to great fanfare and controversy (1984) : Like Hintnaus before him, Joel West is shown wearing nothing but CK briefs. His pose is what's different: He stares directly and invitingly at the viewer, his legs spread wide open, as if asking, "Well, what are you waiting for?". The Tom Hintnaus ad shows the latter's eyes closed, even seemingly asleep while sunbathing. Almost all of the subsequent CK ads do show the model staring at the viewer, but not in the way West - who sought a career as an actor - does. The CK advertising campaign "had a seismic effect on America's social and cultural scene. His advertising campaigns have come to stand for the acceptance of this imagery by the cultural mainstream. For those who can recall a time before it became acceptable for men to regard their underwear as fashion statements, Calvin Klein's images must count among the most revolutionary tools yet devised in the history of consumer manipulation. Four back-to-back color portraits. Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. There is no ISBN. The Pull-Out Supplement is now rare. Presents "Calvin Klein Briefs Pullout Supplement For Vanity Fair Magazine". Four color portraits of very young male and female models wearing revealing Calvin Klein Jeans (and in the case of the main model, CK briefs). The controversy the Supplement aroused was enough for Vanity Fair Magazine to pull it out (as it were) on their own. People are used to Calvin Klein pushing the envelope when it comes to nudity and sex in advertising. So it was not enough for CK to do more of the same at the time. He may have pushed too far in 1992 with this Supplement. Since it was his intention after all, the models came across as "Teenage Lust"-underage (they were legally, adults) at a time when abstinence and celibacy had become the norm in the Age of AIDS. Still, it's the kind of inventive mass-media merchandising Calvin Klein pioneered and became known for, generating tremendous press coverage and consumer attention for himself and his eponymous brand, and revolutionizing the way the fashion industry does advertising. The ad also showcases the provocative and sexually suggestive look perfected by Steven Klein, the fashion and lifestyle photographer (no relation to Calvin), that is much copied by others. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Calvin Klein and Steven Klein collectors. This 24 X 20 Inch Pull-Out Supplement is a contemporary erotic photography classic.
