Hardcover. Etat : New. Contents: 1. Idea of limit on the state. 2. Procedure of limit on the state. 3. Challenge to the state. 4. Pressure on the state. 5. Foundation of the state. 6. The crisis of the state. 7. A theory of the state. After John Rawls argued that justice should be the basis of a liberal state, liberal theory swirls around justice, its various interpretations, its limitations, and its well-grounded reason. Around 2010, the cracks in the invincibility of liberalism became visible. Receding democracy, rising conservatism, identity politics, protectionism, curtailment of freedom, rise of authoritarian leadership, and crisis in governance are contributing in the decline of liberalism in the recent times. Are we heading towards post-liberal world or we need to reorient the philosophical bases of liberalism to rejuvenate it? The book deals with these new trends with a fresh approach and provides a possible solution for saving human values of individual dignity, freedom, equality, fraternity, and peace by exploring the possibility of replacing justice by ahimsa as the philosophical basis of a humanitarian state.…

John Rawls (1921 2002) is one of the leading political philosophers of the twentieth century. His seminal work A Theory of Justice (1971) revived normative political theory and reshaped contemporary political theory. His theory has influenced philosophy, politics, law and economics in more than one way. But, Rawlsian theory is not easy to understand, especially for beginners. Dadhich, in this introductory text, has tried to explain main ideas of Rawls in a concise and accessible manner. The book is structured along the development of Rawlsian theory as manifested in his works. It also has a full length chapter on the main critiques of Rawls. The book is specially written for scholars, teachers and students, keeping in mind their training in political theory. (jacket).…

Democratic Theory. 8. Marxist Theory. 9. Multiculturalism. 10. Feminism/Gender Studies. 11. Ecology/Green Political Theory. 12. Globalization. 13. Postmodernism. 14. Contemporary Political Concepts. Political Theory is a field of study of politics through concepts and principles. It is primarily concerned with the ought to be aspects of the nature, objectives and functioning of the state and government. Political Theory in this sense is primarily a systematic thought about objectives and nature of government, political activities, established political institutions and changes taking place in these fields. Teaching of political theory in India, generally speaking, is either limited to history of political thought between Plato and Marx or empirical political theory or study of isms or contribution of Indian thinkers. Due to dearth of standard texts written by Indian scholars on contemporary political theory, teachers and students find difficulty in engaging with this subject. This book is aimed at filling this void and provides a systematic explanation of major trends in political theory over the last fifty years or more. Contemporary Political Theory covers political theory mostly since the publication of John Rawls seminal work A Theory of Justice (1971) that revitalised normative political theory. Introducing the major theories, concepts and issues in contemporary political theory, this is a novel attempt by an Indian scholar. It covers a whole range of political theories that have dominated the field, including traditionalism, liberalism, communitarianism, Marxism, multiculturalism, feminism, green political theory, globalization and postmodernism. The book has tried to explain this difficult field of study in an accessible, cogent and concise manner. Scholars, teachers and students from Indian and other non-western world will find this text equally engaging. The book will open new vistas of understanding and opportunities to explore political theory and rekindle interest in the subject. (jacket).…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - It is with great joy that we present a collection of essays written in honour of Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, who completed 60 years of age on July 19, 1998, by his friends and colleagues, including several of his for mer students. Jayant has had a long research career in astrophysics and cosmology, which he began at Cambridge in 1960, as a student of Sir Fred Hoyle. He started his work with a big bang, expounding on the steady state theory of the Universe and creating a new theory of gravity inspired by Mach's principle. He also worked on action-at-a-distance electrodynamics, inspired by the explorations of Wheeler, Feynman and Hogarth in that direction. This body of work established Jayant's rep utation as a bold and imaginative physicist who was ever willing to take a fresh look at fundamental issues, undeterred by conventional wis dom. This trait, undoubtedly inherited from his teacher and mentor, has always remained with Jayant. It is now most evident in his untir ing efforts to understand anomalies in quasar astronomy, and to develop the quasi-steady state cosmology, along with a group of highly distin guished astronomers including Halton Arp, Geoffrey Burbidge and Fred Hoyle. In spite of all this iconoclastic activity, Jayant remains a part of the mainstream; he appreciates as well as encourages good work along conventional lines by his students and colleagues. This is clear from the range of essays included in this volume, and the variety and distribution of the essayists.…
