In der Untersuchung wird den Fragen nachgegangen, wie die Bewohner im grenzübergreifenden alemannischen Dialektraum ihre dialektale Umgebung wahrnehmen und welche Bedeutung der Dialekt für die regionale Identität besitzt. Die Analysen der "Mental Maps" von über 200 Informanten erlauben einerseits einen differenzierten Einblick in die Strategien der subjektiven Dialektraumkonstruktion, die sich dabei häufig als überindividuell erweisen und sich meist an räumlich-strukturellen (u.a. landschaftlich-topographischen, territorialen, konfessionellen oder politischen) Faktoren orientieren.
