Hardcover. Etat : Good. 4to (234 x 158 mm), 2 vols in red half morocco with corners, gold fillets and title on spines, marbled paper on boards. Provenance: Sale Pinelli (1789), n. 1985, Comte Dimitri Boutourlin (bookplate). Woodcut architectonical title with portrait of the author on verso, to both volumes, and repeated for the last section of 2nd vol. for "Carlo Quinto in Olma", which has separate title. Pp. [16], 316, [4, of which 2 orig. blanks]; pp. [4], 5-330, [6 of which 3 blanks]; 43, (1), 15, (1) pages; Valgrisi's woodcut device at the end of vol. I and (printed twice) at vol. II. 'La Alamanna' is divided into two Parts, with Oliviero's 'Carlo Quinto in Olma' and 'L'origine d'amore' with separate numbering at the end of vol II. Architectonical woodcut title-page showing a triumphal arch with equestrian portrait and imperial arms of Charles V; woodcut portrait of the author within a scrollwork frame on verso, including his coat of arms, the part I is illustrated with 12 full-page and 24 half-page woodcuts. First edition of this rare epic work chronicling the war between Charles V and the Schmalkaldic League (so the Schmalkaldic War) from 1546-1547. The woodcuts illustrating the first volume are battle and camp scenes with the principal characters identified, most possibly by the same artist who cut for Valgrisi the blocks of the Orlando Furioso. "Pictured in other cuts are various battles of the war, with Charles V and the other participants, maps, and city views. Valgrisi mentioned the expense of the illustrations in his address to the reader in part I, and this program of illustration did prove to be too elaborate to continue throughout the work" (Mortimer Italian n. 326, with 4 illustr.). Tre frontespizi allegorici, ritratto dell'autore, e 36 bellissime illustrazioni xilografiche n.t. (12 a piena pag). Only edition of this nicely illustrated poem, rare to find complete of all parts. Some very slight traces of use and stains to first title; one uninportant tear without loss at first colophon leaf; otherwise a pleasant copy in first Nineteenth Century binding half vellum over boards.
