Il Consiglio Comunale di Bergamo incaricò Giacomo Quarenghi, in città tra il 1810 e 1811, del disegno di un Arco in onore di Napoleone; la costruzione del monumento si avviò tra il 1811 e il 1812 per quindi interrompersi, con la caduta dell'Impero napoleonico. A testimonianza dell'imponente costruzione rimangono alcune documentazioni archivistiche e disegni che, sino ad oggi, non sono stati catalogati ed organizzati in modo organico. Lo studio condotto in occasione delle Celebrazioni del Bicentenario ha permesso di approfondire la storia dell'opera bergamasca, nonché di svelarne la sua trasformazione progettuale attraverso gli schizzi di progetto e le fonti autografe.
