Nonetheless, these national cultures crossed borders with an unprecedented intensity even before globalization transformed the very concept of culture. Op het einde van het academiejaar 1997-1998 zal Reginald de Schryver tot het emeritaat worden toegelaten. Hij zal dan bijna veertig jaar lang aan de Leuvense universiteit verbonden zijn geweest, vanaf 1971 als gewoon hoogleraar. Hij doceerde onder meer Europese cultuurgeschiedenis, geschiedenis van de Nederlanden en historiografie. Zijn belangstelling als onderzoeker richtte zich vooral op de politieke en diplomatieke geschiedenis van het Ancien Regime, de geschiedenis van de Vlaamse Beweging en de geschiedenis van de geschiedschrijving. Dit laatste thema staat centraal in De lectuur van het verleden. Reeds vanaf het begin van de jaren zeventig publiceerde Reginald de Schryver studies over onderwerpen als de vormgeving van het nationale verleden, de periodisering van de geschiedenis, de historische terminologie en het ontstaan en doorleven van historische genres als de wereldgeschiedenis.
