A uncharacteristically open inscription from Stevens to a pen pal on the half-title "Poetry and the materials of poetry are interchangeable terms. / Wallace Stevens / For Murray Welch / XII.10.1937". With a typed letter, signed ("W. Stevens") tipped-in to the first blank, on his Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company letterhead: "December 11, 1937 Dear Murray: I have not only autographed the book but have inscribed what the French call a pensée. No Christmas tree will be complete this year without this volume underneath it. Thanking you for your kind patronage, I am Very truly yours, W. Stevens (in ink) To: Murray D. Welch, Esq. 15 Broad Street New York" The book contains two sections, one around the famous title poem, as well as an extensively revised and shortened version of "Owl's Clover," first published separately by the Alcestis Press the previous year.
