Boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine bumped; gilt lettering and deco on spine normally dulled, but still legible and attractive. Top edge of text-block gilt (dulled). Hinges creased with some dulling. Both front and rear gutters split with exposed binding mesh. Ownership inscription, in pencil, on front end-page. Pages 206-208 (including plate) detached from binding with scuffed edges. Normal toning in margins. Some age-staining around edges of plates. Binding intact. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson.
