A propos de cet article

Description :

First impression of the true first edition, published in 1931 by the Hogarth Press. The book was published as the first volume in a longer work, which was followed in 1939 by a further volume "After the Deluge - A Study of Communal Psychology - Vol. II - 1830 and 1832" and a third and final volume in 1953 "Principia Politica: A Study of Communal Psychology, Being Volume 3 of After the Deluge". ***Near fine in light-brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The spine and the boards are remarkably clean, although there is some fading and discolouration to the top and bottom of the spine where the dustwrapper has got chipped. There is slight creasing to the top of the spine, but no tearing to the cloth whatsoever, and the corners are sharp. Spine tight. Top edge of page block dusty. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean with just some light foxing and offsetting to the endpapers. No internal foxing, creases or tears. ***In the remains of the dustwrapper, described as follows: the front panel is present and almost complete, but without the front flap which has become detached and lost. The front panel has some marks and discolouration, and there are some chips and closed tears to the edges. There is no spine to the dustwrapper, but the back panel is also present and complete, along with the back flap. Again, some marks and discolouration, chips and closed tears to the edges. ***224 mm x 148 mm. 347 pages including an Index of Persons and an Index of Subjects at the back of the book. ***'This is the first volume of a work which is intended to be a detailed survey of the whole of contemporary political and social psychology. It is an attempt to investigate the relation between our individual and communal beliefs and desires on the one hand and contemporary events (like the war) and civilization on the other. The first volume, which has taken a good many years to write, is mainly concerned with democracy and democratic psychology.' [Quote taken from the front of the dustwrapper] ***First impression of the true first edition, published in 1931 by the Hogarth Press, of this political work by Hogarth Press founder Leonard Woolf, husband of Virginia Woolf. The book itself is quite uncommon in first edition, and the dustwrapper (although only partially complete) is very scarce. ***With the additional benefit of some interesting ephemera, in the shape of a small 14pp illustrated booklet which would have accompanied a Schick Dry Shaver - the world's first patented electric razor! ***'Colonel Jacob Schick (Sep 16, 1877 - Jul 3, 1937) was an American inventor and entrepreneur who patented the first electric razor and started the Schick Dry Shaver, Inc. razor company. He is the father of electric razors. Schick successfully patented his first electric razor in May 1930.' [Wiki] --- bearing this in mind, this must have been one of the very first models of the razor, as the booklet was used as a place marker in the book, which was published the following year. A scarce piece of American ephemera. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de réf. du vendeur 8022
