A successful abstract painter in his native England, Harold Cohen (1928-2016) became disillusioned with the art world of London and left for the United States in 1968 to take a teaching position at the University of California, San Diego. There he became involved with a growing community of computer scientists working in the then nascent field of artificial intelligence. A residency at Stanford deepened his connection to the emerging science. Aiming for a program that could conceptualize and realize works of art, Cohen and his collaborators developed AARON, the first AI art-making entity in the 1970s. More than a coloring book, this book includes a substantial interview with Cohen and significant explanations of his methods, along with a generous sampling of computer-art. Laid in is a separately printed prospectus and order form for original drawings by AARON. Cohen's AI-generated art was exhibited widely including at the Brooklyn Muserum, the Tate Gallery, and the Ontario Science Center in Toronto.
