DUBLINERS (Jonathan Cape Travellers' Library edition in scarce pre-war dustwrapper - with 1954 newpaper article loosely enclosed)

A reprint of the Jonathan Cape Travellers' Library edition of Dubliners - Joyce's first published work - a collection of short stories. The book was originally published in 1914 by Grant Richards in an edition of just 746 copies. After an Egoist Press edition in 1922, Jonathan Cape re-published the book in 1923, and the book was reprinted throughout the 1920s and 30s. The first Travellers' Library pocket edition appeared in 1926, and was reprinted in 1927 and 1928 (this edition). Loosely inserted is a full-page (2 sheets) article from the Listener dated March 25 1954: "The Background to 'Dubliners'" by Stanislaus Joyce (James' younger brother).

***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. Boards beautifully clean and unmarked, having been protected by the dustwrapper - the extremities just lightly rubbed. No bumps or creases and no tears to the cloth. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Edges of page block foxed but no internal foxing - just light off-setting to the endpapers. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Interior pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good mustard-yellow printed dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of 3s. 6d. net on the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete with no chips, tears or creases - just light rubbing at the edges. A previous owner has added some paper reinforcement to the inside of the spine (please see scans). The spine of the dustwrapper is darkened, and the front and rear panels are just very slightly foxed. There are no significant faults. Very uncommon thus. ***175mm x 120mm. 256 pages plus an extensive publisher's catalogue - a list of volumes issued in the Travellers' Library covering 114 titles - at the back.

***'"Dubliners" is a collection of fifteen short stories by James Joyce, written from 1904 to 1907. First published in 1914, "Dubliners" presents a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle-class life in and around Dublin in the early twentieth century. The stories were written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. Joyce felt Irish nationalism, like Catholicism and British rule of Ireland, was responsible for a collective paralysis - a theme permeating much of the work. He conceived of "Dubliners" as a "nicely polished looking-glass" held up to the Irish and a "first step towards [their] spiritual liberation"'. ***'John Stanislaus Joyce (17 Dec 1884 - 16 Jun 1955) was an Irish teacher, scholar, diarist and writer who lived for many years in Trieste.
