Printed in the U.S.A. [Date from the copyright pages.] First Printings, stated. "Newly Edited from the Manuscript at the Massachusetts Historical Society." Volume I (1674-1708): Preface by editor M. Halsey Thomas, Chronology, Sewall's Autobiographical Letter to his son, Abbreviations; Volume II (1709-1729): Appendices, including "The Selling of Joseph" and an Index of 124 pages, covering the whole work; xxxvii, 612; xii; 613-1254 pages. Each volume contains: Portrait Frontispiece, Detailed Contents, List of Illustrations, copious Footnotes and black-and-white Illustrations (facsimile documents, portraits). The original gray cloth bears the imprint of the seal of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts Bay Province on both upper boards; black lettering is clear on the gently-bumped spines. The front endpapers depict two different scenes; the rear two different maps. [Please see my 7 images of the actual books.] The interiors are pristine, seeming almost unread: were it not for a small ding to one top edge and three errant spots on the covers, I could call these books 'fine,' which I almost never do. The original sturdy slipcase is strong, with just a few bumps, a touch of rubbing to the edges, and some marks on the rear. The scene on the front is from a painting by A. Herter: "Dawn of Tolerance in Massachusetts---Public Repentance of Judge Samuel Sewall for his Action in the Witchcraft Trials." It bears the original price ($30.00). [Again, see images.] As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking. NOTE there will be a slight increase for domestic book-rate for these heavy volumes; priority or international will have to be doubled. N° de réf. du vendeur 002807
