A propos de cet article

sur les corvettes du roi L'Uranie et La Physicienne, commandees par M. Freycinet, par Js. Arago, dessinateur de l'expédition.Paris: Leblanc, 1822. Two volumes octavo, atlas volume folio, early half calf over boards (edges lightly rubbed), lettered in gilt, marbled edges, pp. xxx; 452; [iv]; 506; scattered foxing, water stain to the inner margin of the first volume, the atlas with 1 lithographed map and 25 leaves of plates. A very good set of the first edition. In terms of its contribution to the advancement of scientific and geographical knowledge, Louis de Freycinet's circumnavigation in the Uranie ranks alongside the most significant expeditions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Jacques Arago, the expedition's draftsman and watercolourist, executed almost five hundred works documenting the voyage. Some were reproduced in Promenade autour du monde, Arago's account of the expedition published within two years of its return to France. The textual narrative takes the form of Arago's letters to a friend, describing in great detail the expedition's discoveries and encounters. Arago was one of the most accurate marine artists of the period, and his visual record had a significant impact on the European imagination. It included topographical views, images of indigenous peoples (including Australian Aborigines) and their material culture, and representations of exotic flora and fauna. The expedition sailed via the Cape of Good Hope and Mauritius to the western coast of Australia, then to Timor and through the Torres Strait, calling in at Sydney. In the Pacific, the Uranie visited the Marianas, Hawaii, and other islands in Polynesia, returning home by way of Cape Horn and Rio de Janeiro. The expedition's vast collection of natural history specimens, and observational data in the fields of astronomy, meteorology and oceanography, were of incalculable value to French - and ultimately international - scientific researchers. Ferguson 850; Sabin 1867. Provenance: John Howell - Books, San Francisco, his description enclosed.
