1954. First American edition (the work was published in the UK under the title 'Cherrill of the Yard'). 248pp., frontispiece, 23 black and white illustrations and 3 line illustrations in the text. Fred Cherrill was widely known as ?The Fingerprint Man". He joined the police in his early twenties, and ended his career as Chief Superintendent of the Fingerprint Bureau at New Scotland Yard. The history of this valuable branch of forensic science in Britain is inextricably linked with Fred Cherrill?s life, for it was not long before the young policeman had gravitated to what was then the relatively unimportant section covering fingerprints. As he increased in professional stature, so did the science to which he was devoted increase in value and significance. Cherrill became involved in many famous cases as the years went on, and he is able to show how fingerprints have been used to prove innocence as well as guilt. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top corners and spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is noticeably faded. Small pieces are missing from the corners and a large piece is missing from the bottom rear edge near the spine. Pieces of up to about 1" are missing from around the top of the spine. There are small tears on the fore edges and a few tears of up to about 1" on the edges. Some of the tears have been repaired on the reverse with tape. N° de réf. du vendeur gCrimeEtc09
