First edition. 16mo, 10.5cm x 13.5cm, pp viii, 152, with one folding illustration and further within text diagrams and illustrations. Bound in original leather over hard boards, with gilt title and arms to the upper cover, all edges stained red. Blind stamp of Thacker & Co., Booksellers, Bombay to the front endpaper and an advertisement from Thacker for pictorial post cards tipped onto the title page. Ownership inscription of G. R. Drysdale to front endpaper, probably George Russell Drysdale, Sergeant, 2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF. Born in Australia in 1886, died as a POW in Turkey, April 1917.

General Sir Beauchamp Duff (1855?1918), who wrote the foreword, was commissioned into the Royal Artillary in 1874 and spent most of his military career in India, rising to be Chief of General Staff, India in 1906 and later to Commander-in-Chief, India in 1913. He was a veteran of the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Second Boer War. This book was "written for the assistance of commanders when operating in broken and mountainous ground and in Bush Countries and are based on the experience gained in late various campaigns", and it is packed with useful information for training and combat in desert and tropical regions. In Very Good condition, clean within, front board slightly bowed. Scarce. OCLC lists four copies, the only one in the U.K. is at the British Library. N° de réf. du vendeur B8774
