[Historical Maps] FIRST EDITION. Folio (41 x 33cm), pp.[2] 93 [3]. Complete with all 21 hand-coloured copper-engraved maps, title page, and index leaf at rear. Publisher's marbled boards with printed paper title label to upper, priced at £3.10s; recently re-back in brown calf with gilt titles and blind ruling. First and final leaves washed, with a faint ink inscription to title page dated 1841. Some wear and chipping to final index leaf, otherwise internally crisp and clean, including the original loose tissue-guards. Extremely heavy wear and ink staining to original boards, now restored to a robust, attractive condition. Very good. The first historical atlas to be produced in Britain. Famous for its pioneering use of the 'fog of ignorance' cloud device, it gradually reveals the known world map-by-map, from the Garden of Eden to the pomp of the Imperial states of the early nineteenth-century.
