44/50. Small Folio. 56 [20]pp. Light brown paper-covered boards portfolio, with string ties and illustration on front cover, housing original stiff cream paper portfolio with color lithograph on front cover, in original glassine. First and second title page with b/w engraving and lettering printed in light brown and black, both with tissue guards. Headers printed in red. A satirical short story by Claire Goll, describing an unusual accident in Paris, involving a runaway horse carriage and its driver. The horse ends up throwing itself into the Seine, with carriage and driver; the driver was saved. The torn Figaro article of the day is placed at the end of the text part, rendered lithographically. This edition is a re-release of Claire Goll's 1926 Bruker publication of the same title with four drawings, ours with fourteen engravings by Marc Chagall, including a color lithograph on wrappers and six additional lithographs, including title page, half-title, and four in-text lithographs, one of them in brown. A complete set of these five lithographs and two engravings is inserted in a portfolio at rear as issued. 200 numbered copies of this edition were printed, 50 of these on Hollande Van Gelder paper, 150 on Rives vellum paper. The lithographs were printed by André Clot; printer's device in red and black on colophon. There were several editions of Goll's title, including a 1925 edition published by Éditions du Rhine in Strasbourg, this with one illustration. A French edition (1926 by Éditions Budry), a German (1950 by Pflug Publishers) and an American edition (1946 by Hemisphere) are recorded, all with four drawings. Text in French. Paper uncut. The lithograph in brown color on page 41 with offsetting to opposing text page. Portfolio and wrappers in very good+, lithographs in near fine condition. Softcover in stringbound boards.
