8vo. (vi), 46pp. Bound to style in full calf; red leather lettering piece, gilt; the boards tooled in blind. Title page remargined (no loss) else a fine copy. With the statement at the foot of the title page: "Published by order of that House." The headpiece on page one consists of repeating crowns over a Tudor rose, a fleur-de-lis, a Scottish thistle and an Irish harp. Gauden, 1605-1662, bishop of Worcester, putative author of the "Eikon Basilike." In the early days of the Civil War his sympathies were with the Parliament, and for a short time in 1643 he was a member of the Westminster Assembly. Later he changed his opinions, but was able nonetheless to retain his living throughout the Commonwealth period. At the Restoration in 1660 he was made Bishop of Exeter, and in 1662 was translated, not as he hoped, to Winchester, but to Worcester. Scarce. Wing G362; ESTC R5024. N° de réf. du vendeur 18071
