Single map, 17 in. x 21 in., extracted from a double-page in a larger atlas. Map is trimmed to the neatlines and laid down on two supporting half-page paper sheets, one on each side of the original centered fold line. Three inch-long closed tears along top-edge were repaired when the map was laid down. The repair is old and appears professional. Map is darkened and slightly faded, but all place-names and other writing is clearly legible. Touch of rubbing on edges. Map from ESTC P-1928. Irish map of County Tyrone from the first printed atlas of Ireland based on the Down Survey of the 1650s; the surveyor and cartographer was WIlliam Petty (1623-1687). The purpose of the survey was demarcate boundaries for new British-oiwned estates to be rewarded the followers of Oliver Cromwell. The survey brought Petty considerable personal profit. As his reward, he acquired approximately 30,000 acres in the Kenmare area, in southwest Ireland, and £9,000. By 1658, when Cromwell died, Petty owned so much Irish land that he essentially owned what is now County Kerry. N° de réf. du vendeur 100275
