A propos de cet article

Maurice Hewlett , in his day, was one of the most popular and respected novelists writing. His prose is crisp without being snippy; his humor is gentle but pointed, without being nippy. "The Open Road" is a romance of sorts, and a darn good one. It's a novel of the sort that isn't being written any more, so if you'd like to escape from the modern world to an Edwardian universe wherein neither of the two devastating world wars had yet to happen, when carriages and broughams and top hats and tails, derbies and boaters for the men and outrageously ornate hats and corsets were the norm for womenfolk, a pretty woman might yet "turn an ankle", and the business class were just that - then this novel might be just what the doctor ordered! Just a brief note about Maurice Hewlett (I've said this elsewhere) - he was well regarded by the reading public and critics alike, and had several lasting friendships among literary notables, including Ezra Pound and James Barrie. Barrie named one of the pirates ('Cecco') in "Peter Pan" after Hewlett's son, Francis. TITLE : Open Country, A Comedy with a Sting AUTHOR : Maurice Hewlett (1861 - 1923) IMPRINT : Charles Scribner's Sons PLACE : New York DATE : 1909 EDITION : First U. S. Edition PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade hardcover; 321 pages + four pages of publisher's promotional list for other Hewlett books; 5 1/4" x 7 1/2", dark green ribbed cloth, with title, etc. lettered in gilt on spine and front; top edge gilt; fore-edge and bottom rough-cut CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book which remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR : Has modest surface rub/scuffing, and near-negligible weathering - spine extremities are compressed and abraded and have a touch of fraying - top edge gilt a bit dulled - else clean and presentable. BINDING : Fairly solid, if somewhat lax - It is obvious that the book has been read but no leaves are detached or loose, and the whole remains nicely serviceable. INTERIOR : A narrow, light damp stain displays on bottom edges of leaves - this is more in the nature of a rippling to the leaves rather than an overt tide-mark - else the interior is clean and presentable with but mild signs of use - previous owners' joint book plate is affixed to the front paste-down (Gilbert and Mary Vincent) - a dated signature for same is inked on the ffep (dated Dec. 25th, 1909) - small dealer's code penciled on rear paste-down.…
