Soft cover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. 191 pages with photographs, diagrams and index. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. The Grünfeld Defence (ECO codes D70D99) is a chess opening characterized by the moves: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5. Black offers White the possibility of 4.cxd5, which may be followed by 4.Nxd5 and 5.e4, giving White an imposing central pawn duo. If White does not take the d5-pawn, Black may eventually play .dxc4, when a White response of e4 again leads to the same pawn structure. In classical opening theory this imposing pawn centre was held to give White a large advantage, but the hypermodern school, which was coming to the fore in the 1920s, held that a large pawn centre could be a liability rather than an asset. The Grünfeld is therefore a key hypermodern opening, showing in stark terms how a large pawn centre can either be a powerful battering ram or a target for attack. Condition: Edge wear with some damp staining, corners bumped, rubbed and creased, soiled else good.

The Schliemann Defense is one of the most difficult and dangerous defenses in chess that Black has available. It starts with 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 f5 !!!! This is not considered a Gambit because it would be useless for White to take the pawn with 4. exf5. Passive Defense is likely to give White a bad game. So, White must counter with 4. Nc3. Condition: Near fine.

Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/4") bound quarter grey cloth with black lettering to spine over black boards in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Brock Poetter, of Price, Potter and Petacque, depended a great deal on his secretary, Helen Doyle. And so one evening, when Helen, looking unusually flustered, asked if she could see him on a personal matter, he was puzzled. He figured that she had finally decided to invest some of her savings. But wanted to talk about her niece, Andrea Doyle, her only living relative. "Andrea's getting married," she said. And she asked him how to hire a detective. It wasn't the girl's fiance she seemed to be worried about. It was his father. Soon after that, the young bridegroom-to-be was found murdered on New York's Upper West Side. Condition: Jacket price clipped else near fine in like jacket.

Octavo (8 1/2 x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's brown boards with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Melissa Craig accompanies her artist neighbor Iris to France, where Iris will teach a two-week course at Philippe Bonard's language and culture centre, while Melissa researches Camisard history for her new thriller. Then a former student plummets down a cliff - on the face of it a tragic accident. But the discover, days later, of a second body in almost the identical spot seems to suggest murder instead. And Melissa, uncovering the strange and violent history of the area, and the past treacheries of a Gestapo infiltrator, finds herself drawn yet again into a present-day mystery. Condition: Fine in like jacket.

Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with silver lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Translated by Joan Tate. First American edition. Fabulously wealthy, she wants her nieces and nephews in the three warring branches of the her family to love and respect each other. But they all seem filled with jealously and hate as they vie obsequiously for their aunt's favor. Now as Aunt Charlotte calls the whole family together for her ninetieth birthday party, the Bernheims, the Svenssons and the Corns sharpen their already well-honored talents for blackmail, deceit, adultery and backstabbing. There is Martin, an eager businessman with an instinct for disastrous investments; his son Victor, a notorious gambler, womanizer and porno photographer; Gittan, a voluptuous though pea-brained pin-up girl; Fredrick, a drunken schemer; Mauritz, prudent keeper of the family accounts; Malin his sultry assistant and daughter; an Ulla, Aunt Charlotte's most ardent flatterer. With relative like these shut up together in a country mansion, it no surprise when double murder strikes. Inspector Betril Durell must find his way through many red herrings and before he comes upon the answer the murderer strikes again. Previous owner's embossed imprint on front end paper, light shelf wear, heal corners gently bumped. Jacket front fold over flap creased else a very good copy in near fine jacket.
