Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1852. First Edition, Myerson's third printing, with no priority established. Two 12mo volumes; publisher's black blindstamped cloth with gilt lettering to spine; dark topstains; pale yellow endpapers; 351; 352pp., else collated and complete; no advertisements as noted in some copies. Mild shelfwear to boards with minute exposure to extremities; bindings sound; contemporary newspaper advertisement for the second edition of the memoirs with blurbs mounted to verso of front free endpaper of volume I; mild toning, else unmarked; a Very Good or better set. Published two years after Fuller's untimely death off the coast of Fire Island, her memoirs were assembled and edited from her letters by Emerson, Channing, and Clarke, and include many of their personal reminiscences. The trio of Transcendentalists were less interested in accuracy than securing Fuller's legacy, and according to essayist Elizabeth Hardwick, they succeeded, "Still, 'Memoirs,' containing many letters and reminiscences of encounters among the group, is extraordinarily interesting and moving; it is possible to view is as the true salvaging of Margaret Fuller's life and thought, which otherwise might have been greatly overshadowed in American literary history." Whether through her personal charisma, her major work "Woman in the Nineteenth Century," or the "hot Transcendentalism" she practiced, according to Hardwick, Fuller's life and work helped ignite American Feminism in the 19th century. Susan B. Anthony said Fuller "possessed more influence on the thought of American women than any woman previous to her time." An important work of American history and literature, and essential to understanding Fuller's life and legacy. The three earliest printings rather scarce in retail.
