The illustrations are from sketches by the author. Lady Alicia Lambart (1818-1913), daughter of Viscount Kilcoursie, married the Reverend James Stevenson Blackwood in 1849. During the Crimean war, Reverend Blackwood was an army chaplain, and Lady Alicia was delegated by Florence Nightingale to create and manage an unofficial hospital for the families of Scutari soldiers.
