Pp. viii+318, 10 plates (4 folding), pictorial title page and tailpiece, appendix; cr. 8vo; dark brown cloth over bevelled boards, lettered and decorated in gilt & blind, edges lightly worn, the spine chipped at extremities, lower joint starting; book label of David LeVine, Sydney, on upper pastedown, binder's ticket (Westleys) at foot of lower pastedown, the upper hinge starting, outer leaves and edges lightly foxed; Hatchard, London, 1881. First edition. *With an inked inscription, presumably by the author, on the half-title page: 'To my nephew Harry Keppel from his affectionate aunt. A. B.' The illustrations are from sketches by the author. Lady Alicia Lambart (1818-1913), daughter of Viscount Kilcoursie, married the Reverend James Stevenson Blackwood in 1849. During the Crimean war, Reverend Blackwood was an army chaplain, and Lady Alicia was delegated by Florence Nightingale to create and manage an unofficial hospital for the families of Scutari soldiers.
