A seventh impression of the true first edition, published in December 1936 (the first impression appeared just four months earlier). Illustrated with twelve black and white photographic plates including the frontispiece showing: 'The Roof of the World', plus black and pink-coloured folding map facing page 17 showing the dotted-line route Peter Fleming travelled from Peking to Kashmir.
***Please note that the map dustwrapper hasn't been removed, so the external condition is assumed, based on the overall presentation of the book. ***Near fine in brick-red cloth-covered boards with silver titles to spine and silver Chinese characters to front board - the Chinese characters represent the author's name: Fu Lei-ming (learned engraver on stone). Top edge of text-block stained red by the publisher (as called for) - still a deep colour, not faded. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges to the fore-edge and bottom edge are untrimmed by the publisher. Internally also near fine, with no ownership inscriptions or annotations. The pages are beautifully clean, with no marks or foxing. No creases or tears. The folding map is also in beautiful condition. ***In the aforementioned handmade map dustwrapper, which is in very good condition - it has been folded and fixed in place but is NOT attached to the boards, so could be carefully removed for inspection if so desired. ***206mm x 128mm. 384 pages including Index at the back of the book.
***'His latest book, News From Tartary is to my mind the best that he has yet written. It describes a riding tour from Peking to India. It reflects the ardours and endurances of a seven months journey across 3,700 miles of desert and upland, through ice and sand, through hunger and thirst. Its political and informative value is considerable. Its entertainment value is immense. It will arouse great fury and cause much pleasure --- It needs literary power to shape a diary of diurnal endurance into an epic of adventure. Such is Mr Fleming's present achievement. And, to me at least, it places him in a category apart.' Harold Nicolson in The Daily Telegraph (Review quote taken from a dustwrapper of another copy - now sold).
***A seventh impression of the true first edition, complete with its folding map still in fine condition - in a unique dustwrapper which reuses a vintage streetmap of New York. One of the classic travel books of the 20th century.
***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***. N° de réf. du vendeur 9398
