An engaging two-volume 1838 First Edition of American travel abroad, Isaac Appleton Jewett s Passages in Foreign Travel records early nineteenth-century impressions of England, Scotland, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland observant, opinionated, and rich in social and cultural detail. Publisher s blind-stamped blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean with light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf and handling wear; spines show mild sunning. A well-preserved example of an early American travel narrative. First Edition, First Printing. Two volumes, complete. 8vo: iv, 319; vii, 369 pp. Each volume bears the neat ownership signature of George F. Houghton (1820 1870) Vermont attorney, editor, historian, and a founding figure of the Vermont Historical Society. Isaac Appleton Jewett s Passages in Foreign Travel stands as a notable early American perspective on European life in the 1830s. Jewett records his travels through England, Scotland, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, offering valuable impressionistic chapters on London and Paris, continental opera houses, roadside inns, and what he wryly called "second-rate restaurants." The set is enhanced by association: George F. Houghton a respected Vermont historian and one of the founders of the Vermont Historical Society has signed both volumes. Such early American travel accounts with contemporary historical ownership are increasingly valued by collectors and institutions tracing transatlantic cultural observation. Subjects: London and Paris travel; European opera houses; Italy and Switzerland; American travellers abroad; Signed association copies; Vermont historical figures, Travel literature; Early American nonfiction; 19th-century European travel; Cultural history.
