Pages are clean, bright, and unmarked throughout. Illustrated with frontispiece, complete with original tissue guard. Black glossy endpapers present. Previous owner?s cursive signature dated 1883 to the front free endpaper. Includes publisher?s advertisements for other works by Oliver Wendell Holmes and a complete index. Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company; New York: 11 East 17th Street; Riverside Press, Cambridge.
Collector?s Note:
The Poet at the Breakfast-Table (1872) is the third and most reflective volume in Oliver Wendell Holmes?s celebrated ?Breakfast-Table? series, blending conversational essays, poetry, and philosophical observation into a unified literary form that became uniquely his own. While The Autocrat introduced the concept and The Professor extended its social commentary, The Poet is widely regarded as the most lyrical and introspective of the three, showcasing Holmes at the height of his stylistic maturity.
This copy represents an early Riverside Press issue, notable for its elegant gilt-decorated green cloth, deckled edges, and original frontispiece with tissue guard intact. Copies retaining bright gilt, sound binding, and clean interiors?particularly with the full complement of publisher?s advertisements?are increasingly scarce. A strong, honest example of a cornerstone work in 19th-century American literary culture, well-suited to collectors of Holmes, Boston publishing, and Victorian essay literature.
