Item description from seller

Exceptionally rare first edition, published in Brussels in 1848, by Dr. E. Bauwens: Lijkbehandeling en Rouwplechtigheden (“Treatment of the Corpse and Mourning Ceremonies”). This is considered the very first Belgian book ever devoted entirely to funeral rites and mourning traditions, combining medical, cultural, anthropological, and theological perspectives on death in the mid-19th century. This particular copy is of outstanding importance: it includes a handwritten note/inscription by the author himself (Dr. Bauwens, Brussels, 1848) on the preliminary leaf. Such copies, bearing direct authorial handwriting, are virtually untraceable on the market. Bound in elegant 19th-century half leather with marbled boards, spine gilt-lettered. Interior shows expected age toning and foxing, but overall remains in remarkably well-preserved condition for its age. The book offers a unique window into early European funeral culture: rituals, burials, symbols of mourning, theology of death, and the anthropology of grief in Belgium and wider Europe. It stands as an essential reference for collectors of rare funeral history, cultural anthropology, theology, and early mortuary studies. Highlights: • First Edition (Brussels, 1848) • Signed / annotated by the author, Dr. E. Bauwens • Earliest printed study of funerary and mourning customs in Belgium • Rare survivor in excellent binding • A unique piece of funeral history, anthropology, and macabre literature Such an important, signed first edition belongs in a serious private collection, museum, or university library. It is not only an antiquarian rarity, but also a cultural treasure documenting one of humanity’s oldest traditions — our relationship with death and ritual. A true once-in-a-lifetime collectors’ item.
