Corners and head and foot of spine lightly rubbed. Small bookseller ticket of original Melbourne bookseller front endpaper, toning/offsetting endpapers, generally very clean. Pages 119 to 122 which is a single double-page is loose, i.e. detached, and seems not to have been sewn in whent the book was originally published as there are no evidence of stitching on the fold. Very good condition. Scarce. The scarce first edition. John Sadleir (1833 - 1919) was an Irish-born policeman. He joined the Victorian police cadets in 1852, and was posted to Ballarat during the diggers' revolt in 1854. (Sadleir's account is one of the few published police recollections.) In 1874 he was promoted to superintendent and posted to the Upper Goulburn district, one of the areas where the police were pursuing the Ned Kelly gang. Several chapters in the book describe the Kelly gang's activities and the police pursuit. Sadleir took command at the final climax at the Glenrowan siege on 23 June 1880, and he describes the shootings and the following trial. The many photographs in the book include Ned Kelly, Joe Byrne, and Ned Kelly's famous death mask. A remarkable book and a sought-after first edition.
