First impression of the true first edition, in the first issue purple cloth binding, as called for. Illustrated and decorated with woodcuts and drawings throughout by Lovat Fraser, Gaudier-Brzeska, Haldane Macfall and Gordon Craig. Tissue-guarded frontispiece showing 'The Splendid Wayfaring' by Gordon Craig. Decorative chapter-heads and first letter-heads and tail-pieces. Top edge of text-block gilt. The book is dedicated to His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Sweden. ***Very good in purple cloth covered boards with gilt titles and gilt decoration and borders to spine and front and rear boards. Spine faded. Edges of boards slightly rubbed and faded. Light foxing and offsetting to prelims and rear pages. Light sporadic foxing to fore-edge and bottom edge of text-block. Interior pages clean. No inscriptions. Spine tight. No slipcase. ***246mm x 196mm. x111 prelim pages including foreword and contents plus 200 pages, plus one full-page black and white illustration to rear. ***Haldane Macfall's book is about the philosophy of art. It is an attractive cloth gilt decorative binding and is illustrated throughout with woodcuts and illustrations by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, the renowned French sculptor (1891-1915), Claud Lovat Fraser (1890-1921), and Edward Henry Gordon Craig (1872-1966), who was designer and theatre director and was a wood engraver.
