Ten documents, primarily from the Civil Rights Defense Committee (CRDC), related to one of the key American labor, free speech, and civil rights cases of the 20th century, which secured the first convictions under the Smith "Gag" Act. Eighteen leaders of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) and the Motor Transport Workers Union Local 544 - C.I.O. were found guilty of sedition, and were imprisoned up to sixteen months. A news release of 10/13/1944, 4 p., corner stapled, 8.5 x 14", quoting a statement by George Novack, secretary of the committee, protesting the DOJ's refusal to give President Roosevelt the petitions collected by the committee calling for a pardon. VG Trouble began when the local 544 abandoned the Teamsters for the CIO (Congress for Industrial Organizations) over political and strategic differences. Due to a combination of potential political favors owed to Daniel Tobin, head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, fifth column fears, and threats to military production posed by militant labor, the offices of the SWP in Minneapolis and St. Paul were raided by the FBI on June 27th, 1941, and 29 individuals would be indicted. The guilty verdict would be handed down December 1st, 1941 with appeals and pardon attempts failing. "During the appeals process, the eighteen spoke in public and raised funds through the Civil Rights Defense Committee (CRDC)." The CRDC was chaired by James T. Farrell and vice-chaired by John Dos Passos with George Novack serving as secretary. The national committee included W.E.B. Du Bois, Waldo Frank, Alexander Meiklejohn, Pauli Murray, A.J.
