First impression of the true first edition, published in 1960. Illustrated with a frontispiece and eight further pages of photographic plates. Evelyn Waugh's final travel book, describing a tour of East Africa made in early 1959 - with a commentary on the journey from Port Said, through Mombasa, Zanzibar, Tanganyika, a safari, and to Rhodesia. ***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. Tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Edges of page block slightly foxed. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 16s - but which has a later W.H. Smith and Son Ltd. 25p price sticker over the original price. The dustwrapper is complete, with just some light edge wear and small nicks to the edges. No serious chips or tears - just some small closed tears to the edges, and some associated creasing (please see scans). There is a patch of browning on the front panel, where a sticker has been removed, and some light staining and browning to the back panel.No fading even to the spine. ***205mm x 140mm. 167 pages. ***Contents: x. ***'x.'
