This first edition, written in prose, compiles autobiographical stories about Archibald Rutledge's life in McClellanville, South Carolina, focusing on the natural world and wildlife around his family's Hampton Plantation. The book is a series of essays featuring hunting and fishing adventures, capturing the "drama, humor and color" of the coastal environment and rural South in the early 20th century. Bound in a yellowish-tan linen cloth with a facsimile of Archibald Rutledge's signature on the front cover in dark brown with dark brown lettering on the spine. Introductory pages are an off white, lovely, textured paper. Chapter headpiece illustrations in dark red. Beautifully illustrated with artwork inserts by Sallie Middleton, also in dark red, against the off white textured paper as used within the introductory pages. A medium sized font. 216 pp. Illustrated dust jacket bears a picture of an otter in black and white at the lower third, with black lettering against a red background on the upper two-thirds. CONDITION: This book itself is fine and in beautiful condition. Dust jacket is VG+ with some chipping and light wear along the extremities and the spine is sunned. This is a lovely copy.
