'Second edition corrected. With some explanatory remarks' at head of half title. Format, quarto, 280mm. Physical description, [4], [5] 6 - 56. Bound in 2's. Uncut. Recto of half title and verso of last leaf lightly dusty and lightly soiled. Few corners turned. Sometime restitched. Overall, a near very good copy of a seemingly unrecorded variant. The ESTC/NA (online 1/2026) records six variants of this title but not this one which has the edition statement on the half title. See ESTC no's - T36700/01/02/03/04/05. Barrington, Shute (1734?1826), bishop of Durham, was born at the family seat of Becket, Berkshire, sixth and youngest son of the prominent protestant politician John Shute Barrington, first Viscount Barrington in the Irish peerage (1678?1734), and of his wife, Anne (d. 1763). Hes was educated Eton College, matriculated, on 10 April 1752, as a gentleman commoner at Merton College, Oxford, graduated BA on 21 January 1755, and became both a fellow of Merton and a student of Christ Church.He was involved in a number of controversies, in1779 the ODNB notes -' he sponsored a bill to uphold the sanctity of marriage by preventing divorced women from remarrying; passed by the Lords it was routed by Charles James Fox in the Commons. A response, entitled The house of peeresses ? containing the debates of several peeresses on the bishop of Llandaff's bill, went to five editions.' For more details of Shute Barrington see ODNB.
