A registration document for a 29-year-old enslaved woman who lived on the north coast of Puerto Rico. In 1867, in response to the American Civil War and abolitionist movements in the Spanish colonies, the Spanish crown began to limit the slave trade. One of the first steps was the establishment of a registry, of which this is an example of the owner's copy. These documents, providing a physical description, ownership, parentage, and children of the enslaved person in Puerto Rico, were needed by enslavers to sell their human property. The Spanish government's goal was to inhibit the importation of new slaves?enslaved persons not registered in 1868 could be taken from their enslavers. Slavery was abolished in Puerto Rico in 1873, but the freed slaves had to work to compensate their former owners. Roughly 9 by 6 inches. Partially printed document.
