Burgundy cloth over thin boards, spine and upper board titled in gilt, with vignette of a roebuck and hound to upper board, top edge g…ilt, title-page printed in red and black. Marks to back cover, bookplate, spotting to end-papers, some tissue guards missing. Slight wear but still a very good copy. A classic on the roe deer and its place in sport. Published in 1904, it was the first English book on roe. It was issued as a subscription edition of only 100 copies and is now extremely scarce. This copy does not state 'Subscription Edition' on the title page, but does have the alphabetical list of subscribers at the back. Chapters include: Natural history of the roedeer; Roe hunting; Roe shooting; The roe in heraldry; Management of roe. It is now believed that "Snaffle" was not, as previously thought, Robert Dunkin but Guy Hardwin Gallenga. .

The book is in 1/4 morroco clampshell box, cloth sides, spine in 6 comp…artments with title and rolled gilt tooling. Limited to 100 copies. This was the first book in English solely devoted to the Roe. Part 1 The Natural History; Part II Roe Hunting; Part III Roe Shooting; Part IV The Roe In Heraldry; Part V Management Of Roe. An extremely scarce title, there were 72 initial subscribers to this book, which included many leading sportsmen of the day, libraries and institutions. A book which seldom appears for sale. A vg copy in the original binding of a scarce title in particularly good condition and well presented in the clapshell box.
