Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Bill Richmond (Cover photography) (illustrateur). First Edition. First printing of the first edition with 1925 on the title page, and no mentions of any subsequent printings on the printer's page. Conrad's last published novel, which was left unfinished at his death. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on the spine, and a blind embossed device on the front board. The gilt has dulled over time, but is still quite bright. The boards are quite clean, but there are some marks commensurate with age and handling over the years - mainly on the spine. The head and tail of the spine are slightly rubbed and creased, but with no fraying or tears to the fragile cloth. There is no splitting at the spine, and no reading lean to the binding. No bumping. Corners sharp. The spine is largely unfaded and without any reading creases. The top edge of the page block is slightly darkened. Very little foxing to the page block edges, but with some heavy foxing internally, mainly affecting the prelims and last few pages (please see scans). Internally the book is very good, with a neat gift inscription in ink on the front free endpaper, and a later ownership name and date in pencil. Some offsetting to the endpapers. No serious creases or tears. No dustwrapper. ***303 pages plus a 4-page publisher's advert of W. H. Hudson's books at the back of the book. 195mm x 130mm. ***'Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski (3 Dec 1857 -3 Aug 1924) was a Polish-British novelist and story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and - though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties (always with a strong foreign accent) - he became a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote novels and stories, many in nautical settings, that depicted crises of human individuality in the midst of what he saw as an indifferent, inscrutable, and amoral world. Conrad is considered a literary impressionist by some and an early modernist by others, though his works also contain elements of 19th-century realism. His narrative style and anti-heroic characters, as in "Lord Jim," have influenced numerous authors. Many dramatic films have been adapted from and inspired by his works. Numerous writers and critics have commented that his fictional works, written mostly in the first two decades of the 20th century, seem to have anticipated later world events.' (Wiki) ***First printing of the true first edition of Joseph Conrad's final unfinished novel "Suspense" - in the original publisher's red cloth-covered gilt-decorated boards, in very good condition for a book now a hundred years old, albeit with the above-mentioned faults. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
