Original cloth, stamped in blind. A constructed set, all with original House of Representatives bindings, but with different coloring and degrees of fading. Ninety tinted lithographic plates, maps (some folding), and numerous in- text woodcut illustrations. All three volumes are quite clean internally, with a few scattered stains. Volume I has a couple of loose signatures, including the one containing the suppressed nude bathhouse plate opposite page 408 (first volume), which is not included in the list of illustrations and which is lacking from most copies. Overall, this set probably grades out at very good. "In March of 1852. Commodore Perry was appointed commander of a naval expedition to be sent to Japan to induce their government to establish diplomatic relations with the United States. Perry felt that the only way to force Japan to cease her isolationist foreign policy would be through exhibiting superior naval forces. After entering Araga Harbor on July 8, 1853, the Japanese were eventually forced to accept a treaty that stipulated better treatment of shipwrecked seamen and permitted American ships to obtain fuel and supplies at two Japanese ports. This is a famous and oft-reprinted image of a significant event in the opening of Japan, and Japanese-American relations. There are a couple of varieties of this lithograph; this is of the variety having at the lower left: "From nature by W.T. Peters" and at the lower right: "Lith. of SARONY & Co. New York.".
