Una de las razones, tal como el propio Erdmann reconoce, podría ser que el tema de la estupidez nos recuerda nuestros propios defectos. Volvernos «sensatos» es un largo proceso: en la estupidez percibimos un poco «los sonidos de la antigua patria, que nos agradan como el dialecto patrio largamente no escuchado». De esta manera, nos reímos con cierta melancolía: así hemos sido también nosotros mismos, o «esto pudo habernos pasado de niños». Y al mismo tiempo encontramos placer en las estupideces, porque ellas son la prueba directa de que hemos abandonado ese estadio. Pero la estupidez también puede enfadarnos. Al ser precisamente la expresión de la ignorancia y la inmadurez, despierta impaciencia en aquellos que tienen una completa y libre disposición sobre su capacidad de juicio. De hecho, determinadas formas de estupidez, en tanto que no están al servicio de la superioridad y del juicio de los «poderosos» (Musil), ya no se experimentan como divertidas, sino como expresión de insolencia, impertinencia, grosería, etc. Los propios estúpidos se encuentran indefensos, y a menudo son objeto de todo tipo de groserías.
