First Edition. 16mo (6 1/2" x 4 1/8"); original stiff tan wrappers with 12 medallions in "blue" [here: now apparently turned black] for each month on engraved cover; 12 full-page engraved illustrations by George Cruikshank, Albert Smith, Gilbert a'Beckett, the Brothers Mayhew, and Ricdum Funnidos [Thackeray]; 64 pages (including title) + [16] adverts. George Cruikshank (1792-1878)--sometimes called the "19th century Hogarth"--was one of the stars of British caricature and illustration during the first half of the nineteenth century. His illustrations for Dickens and early friendship with that author contributed greatly to the "Sparkler's" enormous success. One of the brilliant caricaturist-and-illustrator's finer productions. Nineteen annual booklets appeard from 1835 through 1858. Scarce in wrappers. This copy has various defects: the cover is soiled; pages are uniformly age-toned and most plates are without foxing, though many are waterstained (this principally affecting the verso of the plates, which remain quite enjoyable). Paper spine nearly abraided away; sewing holding by a thread. Lacks after the adverts., the 4pp. Prospectus of "The Naturalist's Library" & coloured specimen plate, so this copy may be an early state. The full-page engravings consist of: 1. January) Last Year's Bills; 2. February) Valentine's Day; 3. March) Tossing the Pancake; 4. April) Return from the Races; 5. May) Beating the Bounds; 6. June) Haymaking; 7. July) Fancy Fair; 8. August) Regatta; 9. September) Cockney Sportsmen; 10. October) Brewing; 11. November) St. Cecilia's Day; 12. December) Christmas Eve." Top edge gilt. 12mo; 7.5 inches tall; [4], 388; [2], 428; inserted frontispieces (1 folding) and title pages, illustrated throughout with nearly 2000 woodcuts and steel engravings (some folding) Undated [1870] The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Minimal shelf handling wear. . The "Comic Almanacks" of George Cruikshank have long been regarded by admirers of this inimitable artist as among his finest, most characteristic productions. Extending over a period of nineteen years, from 1835 to 1853, inclusive, they embrace the best period of his artistic career, and show the varied excellences of hismarvelous power. The late Mr. Tilt, of Fleet Street, first conceived the idea of the "Comic Almanack," and at various times there were engaged upon it such writers as Thackeray, Albert Smith, the Brothers Mayhew, the late Robert Brough, Gilbert A'Beckett, and it has been asserted, Tom Hood, the elder. Thackeray's stories of "Stubbs' Calendar, or the Fatal Boots," which subsequently appeared as "Stubbs' Diary;" and "Barber Cox, or the Cutting of his Comb," formed the leading attractions in the numbers for 1839 and 1840. The Almanack was published at 2s. 6d., but in 1848-9 the size was reduced and the price altered to 1s. The change did not produce the increased circulation expected, and in 1850 it was again enlarged and published at 2s. 6d. In this year some very spiritedly designed folding plates were added, and this feature continued until 1853, when Mr. Tilt's partner, the late Mr. Bogue, thought proper to discontinue the work. First Series 1835-1843. Second Series 1844-1853.

Ajouter au panierTwo vols. Thick 8vo. [6], 388; [4], 428 pp. Woodcut-engraved frontispieces (1 large folding), over 100 plates (many large folding), numerous woodcut text engravings. Late 19th-century half-morocco over blue marbled boards by Riviere, raised bands, gilt ruling on spine, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. (very minor rubbing, very minor wear to lower fore-edges, and slight bumping to corners), still an excellent set from the library of William Thirlwall Bayne (1838-1917), Cambridge Trinity Alum, Barrister on the South-Eastern Circuit, later gentleman farmer at Brookhill, armorial bookplates on front pastedowns. A beautiful Victorian edition of this compilation compiled by Cruikshank from 1835-1848, before Horace Mayhew took over. Cruikshank served as the principle illustrator which exposed all the manners and customs of Londoners to humorous satires and pithy designs which proved very popular. Cruikshank (1792-1878) is perhaps best known for his many illustrations in assorted works of Charles Dickens.
