Externally very smart with bumping to the extremities, very minimal fading to the spine, a slight lean and marks to the boards including a small damp stains to the front board. Bookplate belonging to a 'F. Diba' to the front pastedown with a bookseller's label and slight offsetting to the front free endpaper with light spotting to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned pages and occasional light spotting. Spotting to the fore edge. Very Good. None (illustrateur). book.

A polyglot, Claudius Rich was appointed the East India Company's resident at Baghdad in early 1808, having spent a decade travelling in Egypt and the Middle East, sometimes in disguise. Part of his manuscript library is now housed in the British Museum. The author, Rich's great-great-niece, scoured family librarie…s for primary material on her subject, supplementing these with official East India Company records. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece, 12 half-tone plates, folding map. Original light green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover panelled in blind and with device of star and crescent moon in gilt. With dust jacket. Calcutta bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown; book label of Francis E. B. Witts; blind stamp of Kaikobad Aderji Gai (1881-1969), Peshawar businessman and antiquarian, on title page. A few pinholes of worming to cloth, head of spine bumped, light spotting and toning internally; jacket flaps without price as issued, a few losses and old adhesive tape repairs: a very good copy in good jacket.
