Al…l contents are tight and clean. There are no inscriptions. The jacket is covered with removable clear plastic for protection. "Henry Hope Crealock (1831-1891) was a British soldier, artist, and author. . Several years ago, a client showed me this remarkable collection of sporting sketches. It is our good fortune that the owner of the estate at that time, Sir Edward Scott, had the foresight to preserve these in a large leather bound album, thus surviving a century and more, rather than being discarded as a collection of useless old scribblings - the fate of so many sporting gems of the past. Having the opportunity to study these was a delight, and I resolved that another Crealock work should be produced. I managed to uncover a few more of this gentleman's stalking sketches, and am most grateful to the Honourable Mrs Andrew Wills of Applecross, Mr. Richard Wills and Mr. Ian Scarr-Hall, the present owner of Amhuinnsuidhe, for allowing me to include these at the end of the main collection. The late the Honourable Ronald Eden most kindly wrote the Introduction for me, and also introduced me to this fascinating pictorial record in the first place." Long recognized as one of the most prestigious sporting properties in Scotland, the 62,000-acre Amhuinnsuidhe and North Harris estate covers the northern portion of the island of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. The estate not only boasts superlative red deer stalking and challenging wild salmon, sea trout, and brown trout fishing but, in times past, provided productive walked-up grouse shooting. For centuries the private game preserve of a succession of wealthy landowners. Henry Hope Crealock (illustrateur).

Autograph letter and presentation signature, September [18]- c1871, concerning a request for an autograph. Four-page folded sheet, 180x110mm, light toning, folds as issued, otherwise very good. The first page is a request for an autograph…by a member of the public, with Crealock's later manuscript note written across the head apologising for delay in replying. The third page continues the correspondent's original autograph request. The final page bears Crealock's formal response: a large, bold presentation signature with his military rank appended ('Major-General'). Henry Hope Crealock was a Crimean War officer who rose to the rank of Major-General. He was also a distinguished artist and author in his own right, closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite and Ruskinian circle. Signed by Author(s).

Pen and brown ink on fine wove tissue paper, inscribed below image "The Evening Star that rises… over Sevastopol at sunset!! visible from the Eagle's Nest with the naked eye of a clear evening / from my Journal of the Campaign in the Crimea"; annotation in Crealock's hand on verso, "damp the back of it / will come straight." 270 × 410 mm (image), mounted to 410 × 550 mm overall. A couple of small, closed tears to upper edge, toning and handling, overall, very good and a well-preserved survival. Drawn in the final days of the Crimean campaign, this delicately executed sketch by Major-General Henry Hope Crealock captures a hilltop view of the siege of Sevastopol. Working in fine brown ink on thin tracing paper, Crealock depicts an officer and a lady seated together on a ridge overlooking the devastated city and harbour, the sun setting quietly over the Black Sea. The inscription suggests the drawing was taken "from my Journal of the Campaign in the Crimea," not as a literal journal page but as part of Crealock's wider visual record of his time in the Crimea. The use of tissue-weight paper, common among military topographers, allowed sketches to be folded into campaign folios and traced over for engraving. Crealock, educated at Rugby, served in the 90th Light Infantry and landed at Balaklava in December 1854. He was mentioned in despatches for gallantry at the assaults on the Redan and went on to distinguished service in India, China and Africa, along with illustrating Wolf-Hunting, or Wild Sport in Lower Brittany (1875) and contributing drawings to the Illustrated London News. This original ink sketch from the very beginnings of his career as an illustrator is scarce. Signed by Author(s).
