Ajouter au panierA beautiful and rare humanist collection of Josephus Flavius' works, edited by Jakob Sobius (1493-1527/1528), a native of Cologne and one of its most prominent humanists. The volume contains Josephus' most famous historiographical works, i.e., "Antiquities of the Jews" (written in 94 AD) and "The Jewish War" (ca. 95 AD), translated into Latin by Rufinus of Aquileia (344/345-411); these are supplemented with Josephus's "Against Apion", a defence of Judaism as classical religion and philosophy, and "De insignii Machabaeorum martyrio liber unus" (commonly known today as the "Fourth Book of Maccabees"), a homily or philosophic discourse erroneously ascribed to Josephus and edited by Erasmus of Rotterdam. Antiqua typeface; two pages feature an identical Renaissance decorated border with figural motives; two pages are decorated with a large woodcut headpiece; other pages are decorated with large woodcut initials with figural motives. The title leaf is missing; its border features Renaissance woodcuts depicting Hercules' labours; all of them were made after Anton Woensam's drawings; the same likely goes for the decorated borders. Several pages contain very old pen marginalia; endpapers contain ownership and other notes in Czech and Latin from the 17th century. Some folios are incorrectly numbered but no folio is missing. /// Parchment binding with raised bands, blind embossing, leather strings, metal clasps and coloured edges; hardback, [29]+347 folios, 2° (21 x 32 cm), parchment worn and only partially preserved, with two recent paper labels, one metal clasp missing, one string worn, edges yellowed and faded, top edge darkened, endpapers worn and yellowed, with tears along inner edge, back endpaper waterstained and backed/fixed with piece of paper, slightly starting hinge, ca. 70 leaves waterstained, other signs of wear and age are quite rare (ink stains, tiny bookworm traces, tiny chips and tears, small smudges and fingerprints), title leaf missing, condition: good Book Language/s: Latin.

Ajouter au panier8vo., First and Sole Edition thus, on laid paper, text in Latin, with several fine woodcut head- and tail-pieces, some slight age-staining (mainly marginal, more pronounced on a handful of leaves); contemporary marbled boards, very neatly rebacked in calf to style, back with four raised bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered in gilt, a remarkably, fresh, crisp, clean copy. First published in 1535, the 'Ecclesiastes' is Erasmus' last and longest work, a detailed treatise on preaching and the offices and duties of priesthood. O'Malley deems it 'a major monument - perhaps the major monument - in the history of sacred rhetoric. Its only rival is the De Doctrina Christiana of Augustine' (Erasmus and the History of Sacred Rhetoric: The Ecclesiastes of 1535).Bray's extended (25pp) introduction begins in typically exuberant fashion - 'Jesu & Omnia!', dedicating the printing to Edmund [Gibson], Bishop of London [1669-1748] and Edward, Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. Erasmus' famous preface, revealing his responses to the deaths of More, Fisher, Wareham and Mountjoy, is given in full. Thomas Bray (1656-1730), Commissary of Maryland and founder of SPCK, did much to spread abroad knowledge of significant religious works. 'It was a great service to the cause of Christian knowledge', undertaken for no reward and with 'unspeakable labour and fatigue'.Rare.

Note The 1519 edition greatly expands upon Erasmus' first New Testament and corrects many typographical errors. Erasmus enlarged several sections with newly composed material and added the Lives of the Evangelists by Sophronius, introductions to the Gospels by Theophylact, and a letter from Pope Leo X expressing his pleasure that a second edition was being published. In his three prefaces, Erasmus stressed the diligent study of the New Testament, argued that no layman or woman should be denied access to Scripture in the vernacular, and explained his desire to improve the Vulgate through closer adherence to the Greek originals. His first preface, the Paraclesis ("summons"), presents a compelling call to pursue the "philosophy of Christ" through the reading of Scripture. William Tyndale later referenced it in the preface to his Obedience of a Christian Man (1528). Erasmus introduced roughly four hundred changes to the Vulgate text. One notable example appears in Gabriel's greeting to Mary at the Annunciation (Luke 1:28). The traditional Vulgate reading, Ave gratia plena ("Hail, full of grace"), familiar from countless Books of Hours, was revised by Erasmus to Ave gratiosa ("Hail, gracious one" or "graceful one"). The former suggests a state of being filled with grace, whereas the latter implies grace already inherent within Mary. Another significant revision concerns the preaching of John the Baptist in the wilderness (Matthew 3:2). Where the Vulgate reads penitentiam agite ("do penance"), Erasmus proposed resipiscite ("repent" or "be penitent"). The former implies an outward sacramental act associated with the Roman Church, while the latter emphasizes an inward spiritual turning toward God. This distinction carries significant doctrinal implications. Erasmus' translation of the Bible "formed the basis of the New Testament translations of both Luther and Tyndale and hence had profound influence on later Protestant versions of the Bible" (PMM). House of Elzevir edition, printed by Lodowijk Elzevir, who met Galileo in 1636. His grandfather founded the publishing company in the 1580s. One of the many works of the philosopher and Catholic theologian known as the 'Prince of Christian Humanists.' Published in 1518, the pages 'held up contemporary religious practices for examination in a more serious but still pervasively ironic tone' (Coffin/Stacey, Western Civilizations). Christian Humanists viewed Erasmus as their leader in the early 16th century. Erasmus' works had greater meaning to those learned few who had a larger knowledge of Latin and Greek. Colloquies in Latin means a formal written dialogue, thus in his book Erasmus explores man's reaction to others in conversations. The Colloquies is a collection of dialogues on a wide variety of subjects. They began in the late 1490s as informal Latin exercises for Erasmus' own pupils. In about 1522 he began to perceive the possibilities this form might hold for continuing his campaign for the gradual enlightenment and reform of all Christendom. Between that date and 1533 twelve new editions appeared, each larger and more serious than the last, until eventually some fifty individual colloquies were included ranging over such varied subjects as war, travel, religion, sleep, beggars, funerals, and literature. All of these works were in the same graceful, easy style and gentle humor that made them continually sought as schoolboy exercises and light reading for generations. "Originally written in his early days at Paris as dialogues illustrating the art of polite conversation, they were afterwards expanded into conversation pieces in which all the topics of the day were discussed with a freedom which ensured their popularity. Later in the century and up to the eighteenth century they were a set book in schools, and there are lines in Shakespeare which directly recall Erasmus's words." - Printing and the Mind of Man 53 (referencing the 1524 original).
