Ajouter au panierFIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). pp.648. Publisher's original orange cloth, spine lettered in gilt on red ground, top edge dyed light red. Half-tone portrait frontispiece, 51 further plates in the text (9 coloured), 9 folding maps on 7 sheets (as always lacking the Sketch Map showing the Motor route from Kuwait to Riyadh)… and 6 folding genealogies inserted loose in a band at the end of the book, numerous diagrams and illustrations in text. Errata slip bound in between pp.18 & 19. Slight rubbing to s[pine extremities, light shelf wear, generally very good. Dickson forms part of that tradition of British writers and travellers - Burton, Doughty, T.E. Lawrence, Bertram Thomas, H. St. John Philby, Gertrude Bell, Freya Stark, Thesiger - who became fascinated by Arabia and the Arabs, often espousing their causes and aspirations. Himself a fluent Arabic speaker, Dickson's friendship with such as Ibn Sa'ud and his travels in the Arabian peninsular resulted in the present work. A classic of the literature, it introduces the reader to the cultural life of Arabia, with chapters on hawking, food, smoking, pearl diving, nomad life, the Haj, the Arab horse, proverbs, and much else. Dickson throughout his writing expresses his deep admiration for Sheikh Salim Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah of Kuwait.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition. "A book would be needed to do full justice to the contents of this immense and valuable labour of love, which is admirably illustrated by some excellent photographs and many first-class drawings and coloured plates. These, with the plans, sketches and maps in the cover pocket, will repay careful study" (Philby, p.… 233). Lieutenant-Colonel Harold Dickson (1881-1959) was raised in Damascus, where his father was the British consul. A British political agent in Bahrain (1919-20) and Kuwait (1929-36), he subsequently worked for the Kuwait Oil Company. Following his death, his wife, the Arabist Violet Dickson (1896-1991) remained in Kuwait until the Iraqi invasion in 1990, becoming a prominent member of the expatriate community. For this work, she contributed research on flora and fauna, foreshadowing the publication of her The Wild Flowers of Kuwait and Bahrain (1955). This copy is in the second state, page 23 corrected to remove the reference to the map of the motor road from Kuwait to Riyadh, which was not issued. Macro 840. Harry St John Bridger Philby, "An Encyclopaedia of the Desert Arab", Geographical Journal, vol. 115, no. 4/6, 1950. Octavo. Half-tone portrait frontispiece, 54 plates (9 colour), and map, 7 folding sheets of maps and 6 folding pedigrees tucked in rear band, title page vignette printed in red and black, errata slip facing p. 18. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in gilt on red ground and at foot, linen inner hinges, top edge orange. Cloth soiled, spine sunned and with a few ink spots to foot, a little foxed along edges and internally, some maps lightly foxed and toned: a very good copy.

Ajouter au panierSecond edition, inscribed by the author on the title page, "'Happy Birthday' from H. R. P. Dickson. 23.2.56." First published in 1949, The Arab of the Desert was described by Freya Stark as "indispensable to all who wish to travel or live with some knowledge in the region". Lieutenant-Colonel Harold Dickson (1881-1959) was raise…d in Damascus, where his father was the British consul. A British political agent in Bahrain (1919-20) and Kuwait (1929-36), he subsequently worked for the Kuwait Oil Company. In the opinion of Harry St John Philby, "a book would be needed to do full justice to the contents of this immense and valuable labour of love, which is admirably illustrated by some excellent photographs and many first-class drawings and coloured plates. These, with the plans, sketches and maps in the cover pocket, will repay careful study" (p. 233). Violet Dickson (1896-1991) contributed research on flora and fauna. Four of the maps are bound before the index as issued, rather than loose in the end band as seen in other copies we have handled. The table of contents calls for a three-sheet "Sketch Map showing Motor Road from Riyadh to Kuwait". This appears to have been included with only a subset of copies, perhaps those from a first issue, and is absent here. Macro 840. Freya Stark, "A Document of the Desert", The Observer, 22 January 1950; Harry St John Bridger Philby, "An Encyclopaedia of the Desert Arab", Geographical Journal, vol. 115, no. 4/6, 1950. Octavo. Half-tone portrait frontispiece, 55 plates (9 colour), 4 maps bound in at end, 5 folding maps and 6 folding genealogies loose in end band, diagrams and illustrations in text, title page partly printed in red. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in gilt on red ground. Spine sunned and foxed, gentle toning and spotting internally, page with corner folded, material in end band clean and fresh: very good.
