Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. This is a well preserved copy of the February 1893 "Cosmopolitan Illustrated Monthly Magazine". For many collectors and fans of science fiction, the main thing in this issue is an early science fiction story by Julian Hawthorne titled "June 1993" in which the protagonist visits the United States 100… years in the future. That meant 1993. The author imagines a vastly different world, including boat-like vehicles that travel through the air, high above the landscape. In one of the fine illustrations by Dan Beard (of Boy Scouts fame) a group of people are on a luxury cruise in the flying boat. They look much like an assortment of hippies and bohemians. Julian Hawthorne was the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Sophia Peabody. See the Table of Contents, provided below for a complete list of the issue's contents. BINDING : Solid - no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : There are a few smudges and small spots, but nothing egregious, the issue being clean and unmarked throughout. Laid in memorial card for Dolben printed on the occ…asion of a ceremony held at the Parish church of St Mary the Virgin, Finedon on the 100th anniversary of the poet's death. Dolben died at the age of 19. He had been about to go up to Oxford. Robert Bridges was his cousin. Dolben was the object of affection (possibly even obsession) for Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Hardcover. Etat : Fair. Second Impression. 160p octavo. Spine is very worn, cover soiled. Archibald Fleming MacLiesh's copy with his ownership signature on the front fly leaf. Macliesh 1911-1973 in order to distinguish himself from the poet dropped his last name when he published his first book of poetry "The Island Called Pharo…s" 1935. Archibald MacLiesh wrote a blurb on the the front cover of the jacket. In addition Fleming wrote 22 lines of support for Hopkins. An unusual copy.

Reads 'My dear Miss Stuart / I don't think Mr. Bridges brings us "much forrider" with Keats. Many thanks for the article but I am a little disappointed that his criticism seems so fla…t.
