Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. Here is "The Pictorial History of Wells Cathedral" by the Very Rev. F. P. Harton B.D., Dean of Wells. The book, a slim paperback of 24 pages, was published by Pitkin Pictorials at ( John St., London, circa 1957. The book, which has an authoritative text, is illustrated by numerous black-and-white ph…otographs, some of them full-page. The photos depict very clearly both the exterior and the interior of the cathedral. Lots of interesting historical facts, as well as close-ups of architectural details of corbels, capital and other stone carvings which are found throughout the cathedral. As a bookman I like particularly the page devoted to the cathedral library , which was built over the east cloister by Bishop Bubwith in the 15th Century. Quite a few of the books in the library are found still chained to the shelves, just as they were in the 15th & 16th centuries. How fine it would be to browse through the collection. Two of the many important books held by the library are "The Hayles Psalter", a beautiful hand-colored incunable, which is shown in the guide book; also shown are pages from "Turner's Herbal" which was the first of any such herbal book written by an Englishman. All in all the book presents a fascinating look at the structure and contents of one of England's architectural marvels. CONDITION -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Previous owner's signature penned on front cover (Mildred Stauffer); the cover spine is rubbed, and there are small nicks and such along the cover edges, The corner tips are softly bumped with attendant light creasing (of no great effect). There is also penciled (?) in the very top fore-edge corner a just barely perceptible "POV 9040" - else the exterior is clean and bright. BINDING -- Solid enough - the staples are still well embedded. _ The book opens easily. No leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR -- The previous owner penned her initials near the bottom of the rear cover's recto : (M.R.S.), else the interior is clean and free of marking.
