Ajouter au panierWraps. Etat : Good to Very Good. No date (circa 1925). #186 in Westbrook's The Hart Series. The author died of typhoid fever in 1885, at the too-young age of 38. Curiously, bound into the back of the book are the first 39 pages -- ending in mid-sentence -- of another Conway/Fargas title, "Living or Dead," which Westbrook also pu…blished in The Hart Series as #167 (was this additional material a mistake?; an attempt to hook readers on another Conway/Fargas title?; a common Westbrook practice?; an Axis of Evil plot?). Rubbing, light smudging, crosscrack, spine scrapes, vertical creases to back cover, some soil/spotting to edges, tanned pages. A fragile item to begin with, this is an ok copy of an elusive edition. Size: Digest. Book.

Ajouter au panierHard Cover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Later Edition. Early American edition of this thriller, a bestseller after its first appearance in Arrowsmith's Miscellany in late 1883, and cited by Emily Dickinson as a good read. Though dated 1884 on the title page, the books listed in our example's endsheet would date it to 1885, though of… course they could be 'upcoming' titles - Holt first editions of the period are difficult to identify. One of the publisher's Leisure Hours Series, "works whose character is light and entertaining, though not trivial.not.unworthy of a place on the library shelves." Small hardcover, as pictured. Book shows some wear & rubbing, corners bumped, paper lightly tanned. Text clean; [4], 254 pages plus a handy leaf at the beginning for librarians to clip out & paste to card catalogs; endsheets listing other publisher's titles. Size: Duodecimo.

First enlarged (or combined) edition. The first half of…this text (with seven stories) was published earlier as CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE AND OTHER STORIES (a twenty-cent paperback in the "The People's Library" series in 1885). Whether there was an earlier separate publication for the second half is unknown. No listings in OCLC or The American Catalogue correspond to a title with these five stories. They may have been printed expressly for this cloth edition -- a rare book with just two holdings in OCLC libraries, and no mention in The American Catalogue. Conway was a best-selling author in the mid-1880s and his work was extensively pirated in America with the same material being sliced up again and again in different combinations by different publishers. Of the twelve stories here, at least two have supernatural themes: "Our Last Walk" (a ghost story) and "The Daughter of the Stars" (an occult romance). Some of the others are crime and mystery stories. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day, Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature, or Reginald (1979; 1992). Square of paper glued by previous owner to part of front paste-down (to cover a signature?). Bottom corners bumped, top corners rubbed, cloth at top of spine a little pulled, still a bright very good copy. (#128540).

Another article pasted to top of first page of text is about "Works By Local Authors," including Conway. This article is nearly torn in two. Some stains to text. Two letters by the author are at rear of text, in both of which Fargus thanks reviewers for their "kind review," one from 1880 and one from 1883. Clipping tucked in at rear has a poem by the author. This novella brought the author worldwide fame and established the format of the Victorian "shilling shocker." A sensational tale of murder, amnesia, exile, assassination and detection, the book was a great hit, translated all over Europe, became a play, and sold over 350,000 copies in four years.
